How to Thrift Online in Kenya (Without Wasting Money)
Buying secondhand online is simple when you know what to check. Here’s a practical checklist for photos, condition, sizing, and delivery so you don’t end up with a regret purchase.
How to Thrift Online in Kenya (Without Wasting Money)
Buying secondhand online can save money and get you better pieces, but only if you know how to check a listing properly. Here’s a simple method you can use every time before you buy.
1) Start with the photo check
A good listing should show the item clearly. Before you fall in love with it, look for:
Front view (full item)
Back view
Close-up of the fabric or texture
Close-up of the label (brand + size)
Close-up of any defects (if there are any)
If photos are dark, blurry, or cropped so you can’t judge the shape, ask for clearer ones. If the seller won’t share them, skip the item.
2) Understand “condition” fast
Secondhand items aren’t all the same. When reading a listing, confirm:
Any stains (especially collar, underarms, hem)
Fading or pilling
Loose stitching
Zips and buttons working
Stretching around necklines and waistbands
If a listing says “good condition” but hides the details, ask direct questions.
3) Don’t trust the size tag alone
Sizes vary by brand. The safest way is to confirm measurements:
Chest / bust
Waist
Length (top or dress)
Inseam (pants)
If you already own something that fits well, measure it and compare.
4) Know what materials last longer
If you want pieces that hold up, check for:
Cotton, denim, wool, leather (often strong long-term)
Very thin synthetics that lose shape quickly (be more careful)
Material matters more than the label when buying secondhand.
5) Agree on delivery before you pay
Before you complete a purchase, confirm:
Where the seller will deliver or meet
When it can happen (same-day / next-day / 2–3 days)
Delivery fee (if any)
Clear delivery expectations prevent most problems.
6) Use ratings as the final filter
If you’re unsure between two similar items, choose the seller with stronger ratings and better listing quality. Consistency is a good signal.
Before buying:
Clear photos?
Condition explained?
Measurements confirmed?
Delivery plan agreed?
Seller ratings checked?
That’s it. If those five are solid, you’re usually safe to buy.
